Password-protect a PDF
Lock a PDF so it can only be opened with your password. Encryption runs in your browser with qpdf compiled to WebAssembly, so neither the file nor the password is uploaded.

About this tool
Strong encryption
Files are encrypted with AES-256 (PDF 2.0 standard security, revision 6), supported by all current PDF readers. Before you download, the result is checked: it must refuse to open without the password and open with it.
Your password stays with you
Encryption happens in your browser. The password isn't sent anywhere, logged or stored, and it's cleared from the form when the file is ready.
Frequently asked questions
What if I forget the password?
Nobody can recover it, including us: we never see it. Store it somewhere safe.
What do the restrictions do?
They ask PDF readers not to allow printing, copying text or editing. Restrictions need a separate owner password; anyone with it can lift them. Readers that ignore the rules can bypass restrictions, so use them as a deterrent.
Is my file uploaded?
No. It's processed in your browser and never leaves your device.
