How to merge PDF files without uploading them
Published · 2 min read
Most online PDF mergers send your documents to a server, combine them there and send the result back. That works, but it means a copy of every page sits on someone else's computer for a while. You can merge PDFs without that step: a modern browser is perfectly capable of doing the work itself.
Why it matters where the merging happens
The files people merge are rarely holiday photos. They are signed contracts, bank statements, payslips, medical letters and ID scans being put together for an application. When a tool uploads them, you are relying on its retention policy, its logs, its staff and its security, even if the upload itself is encrypted.
A browser-based merger reads your files from your disk into the page's memory, builds the new PDF there and hands it to you as a download. The document never has to cross the network, so there is no copy elsewhere to delete.
Merge PDFs step by step
- Open Merge PDF. You don't need an account.
- Choose two or more PDF files, or drop them onto the page.
- Use the up and down arrows to set the order. Files are merged top to bottom. To place individual pages, switch to page view, where you can also drag, rotate or remove single pages.
- Select Export PDF to download merged.pdf.
What is kept, and what isn't
Pages are copied as they are: page content, page sizes and rotation stay exactly the same, text stays selectable and images are not recompressed, so there is no quality loss.
Bookmarks and interactive form fields from the source files are not carried into the merged file. If your files contain them, you'll see a notice before exporting, so nothing disappears silently.
Limits and special cases
- There's no fixed number of files. Each file can be up to 500 MB and the merged document up to 5,000 pages; your device's memory is the practical limit.
- Password-protected PDFs can't be merged directly. Remove the password first with Unlock PDF. You need to know the password, and unlocking also runs in your browser, so neither the file nor the password is uploaded.
- If you need more than ordering whole files, Organize PDF shows the pages of all your files in one grid. You can reorder, rotate, duplicate and delete pages with up to 100 steps of undo, and it also runs in your browser.
Don't take our word for it
Any tool can claim that files stay on your device. You can check it yourself in about two minutes with the developer tools built into your browser. We explain how in How to check whether a PDF tool uploads your files.
